SAN ANTONIO – A good Samaritan who wanted to rescue an injured animal experienced an unforeseen situation and had to ask for help.

Last week, a woman was driving at night when she saw the animal on the side of the road. She thought it was a lemur. She used a towel to pick him up and carry him to her vehicle.

San Antonio Animal Care Services (ACS), who shared the account, said the animal became rapidly agitated. This caused the woman to have to get out of the car and call for help.

Animal experts explained that while it looks like a cross between a cat, a fox and a lemur, it is actually a ringtail. They belong to the raccoon family.

The small animal was transported to the animal emergency room to receive treatment for injuries it sustained prior to its rescue.

What is a ringtail?

The Ringtail is a cat-sized carnivore, according to the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife. It resembles a small fox with a long, flattened tail with black and white rings.

According to the agency, these animals are almost entirely nocturnal and spend most of the day sleeping in their burrows, where they emerge at night to feed. Their diet consists of birds, rodents, reptiles, and amphibians, as well as grasshoppers and crickets.
