WhatsApp is not yet suitable for sending high-quality photos to contacts. Because the images are compressed before transmission, some details are lost. In the near future, however, photos will also be able to be transferred without prior compression.

WhatsApp uses a compression method when transferring photos to save storage space and data volume. Since an image is often several megabytes in size these days, photos sent in bulk could otherwise become a problem for many WhatsApp users. In addition to simple memes, screenshots and low-quality snapshots, some users also want to send high-quality images.
With WhatsApp, photos can soon be sent without compression

This possibility is severely limited by the compression algorithm. At the receiver, clearly visible artefacts often appear. According to WABetaInfo WhatsApp is now planning an option with which the photos can be sent uncompressed. With the “Photo quality” setting, a user can choose whether to send pictures with automatic size, the best possible quality or in data saving mode.

Function currently only in the beta version

At the moment, WABetaInfo only discovered the new feature in the latest beta build 2.23.2.11 of the Android version of the instant messenger. Since this is a frequently requested function, it is likely that updates for the final WhatsApp versions will appear soon. However, it could still be a few weeks or months before an update is published. WhatsApp has not yet officially announced the feature and has therefore not yet given a specific date.
