Nutritionist Laura de Sousa Silva, who works in Brasília, understands the feeling of those in a hurry. “It’s natural for people to have goals and objectives, but it’s important not to let anxiety get in the way of changing habits,” she points out.

According to the expert, following a calorie-restricted food re-education diet is enough to get changes in the body quickly.

Laura explains that, from the first week onwards, it is already possible to notice improvements in physical disposition, performance during training and sleep quality. In the period, water retention – the famous swelling – decreases and digestion and skin aspect improve. “When nutrition is correct, the body evolves every day”, says the nutritionist.

Food reeducation with caloric restriction limits calorie consumption in a gradual and balanced way. However, Laura adds that the best eating plan is the one that the person can practice for the longest time.

“The best diet is the one that adapts to reality, tastes, routine and can be done consistently. To achieve the fastest result, a multidisciplinary work is recommended, which includes nutrition and physical activity”, suggests Laura.

Mirror or scale?

The results are more noticeable in front of the mirror than on the scale. “Body recomposition often occurs, which is fat loss with muscle mass gain. The mirror and the clothes are usually better parameters at the beginning”, explains the nutritionist.

Another factor that disfavors the scale as a parameter is the variation of brands and wear and tear due to repetitive use, which can leave the equipment out of calibration. Laura suggests that, if possible, people weigh themselves on the same scale and, preferably, at the same time.

“The thing about always weighing yourself at the same time is because our weight tends to fluctuate throughout the day. Assessing weight right after waking up, without drinking water or eating a meal, is different from weighing yourself at the end of the day, after having eaten several meals, drunk fluids and trained. All this alters the weight”, says Laura.

Do heavier people lose weight faster?

When there is a lot of excess weight, weight loss occurs more quickly at first. It is common, for example, for obese people to lose tens of kilos when starting a treatment. But as weight approaches ideal weight loss becomes more difficult.

“This is because our body does not want to lose weight, which can make the process more laborious over time. Mechanisms such as reduced metabolism and adaptive thermogenesis can make it harder to lose weight as time goes by,” clarifies Laura.
