One of the surprises of the Oscar 2023, Triangle of Sadness arrives in Brazilian cinemas in time for the public to check out this curious story before the award ceremony. The feature film directed by Ruben Östlund did not make much noise, but it snapped up three nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.

However, it is precisely its story that is the great attraction — not by chance, it also disputes the statuette for Best Original Screenplay. All this by bringing to the screen the old discussion about social issues, labor relations and class struggle in a very acid way and in that satirical tone that always conquers us.

And even though there are no big names in the cast — Woody Harrelson is the highlight here —, the way Östlund conducts this plot through these illustrious unknowns is something that dialogues with the very criticism that Triangle of Sadness proposes to tell. A very well done joke that secured the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022.

What is Triangle of Sadness about?

As mentioned, the script Triangle of Sadness stands out for the way in which it presents a critique of labor relations and class struggle with a satirical lightness that is a lot of fun to follow. And all this is portrayed in the microcosm of a luxury boat for very important passengers.

They are mega businessmen, celebrities and models who embark on this trip to a paradisiacal landscape so they can rest and enjoy all the luxury and comfort that money can buy — and that includes having dozens of employees always ready to serve them.

But that changes when the vessel sinks and all passengers and crew find themselves stranded on a deserted island. Unable to return home, they must organize themselves to survive until a rescue appears.

And then there is the subversion of these relationships. Accustomed to always being served and having an infinite number of employees at their disposal, these rich people will see this logic reversed when the employees prove to be highly skilled in dealing with such an adverse situation.

Under the command of an eccentric captain, lived by Woody Harrelson, they will realize that money is not able to buy what they really need and that everything belongs to those who produce everything.

When does Triangle of Sorrows open in theaters?

Like most Oscar-nominated films, Triangle of Sadness arrives in Brazil late. In the United States, the feature premiered in October 2022 and, although it was not a huge success, it made enough noise both to achieve an expressive box office and also to draw the attention of critics and the awards themselves.

Over here, the film will be released on February 16th with distribution from Diamond Films. Despite this, it will be possible to check out this curious satire a little earlier, as some cinemas must do special sessions starting on the 9th of February.
