[Deal du Jour] With the disappearance of HBO series on the OCS platform since January 1, 2023, the question of accessibility to content arises. The majority of them having not yet found a new broadcaster, there is today no legal way to see them in France. Unless you have them on Blu-Ray or DVD, this event is an unfortunate reminder that you don’t own what you’re watching. We have therefore selected a few series that deserve a place in your library.

Which HBO series to buy?

Game Of Thrones

Game Of Thrones is undoubtedly one of the best-known HBO series, and one of the most popular series of recent years. The complete Blu-ray is currently available on Amazon at the price of 60 €or on DVD at the price of 50 €.

This adaptation of the novels (still in progress) by author George RR Martin is spread over eight seasons. The plot is set on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos, as an unprecedented winter approaches. Creatures from the far reaches of the North seem to threaten the relative peace of the kingdom. In the middle, several characters fight a battle for the Iron Throne, symbol of power. Mythology, politics, religion and civil war are the main themes that the series explores over several seasons of uneven quality. But overall, Game Of Thrones is a great series that has been able to redefine a genre, bringing it new codes.

Chernobyl

Chernobyl, as its name suggests, deals with the Chernobyl nuclear disaster that took place on April 26, 1986 in the USSR. The series is available on Blu-ray at a price of €20.99and on DVD at the price of 22.45 € on Amazon.

This five-episode mini-series takes place over several weeks and traces in detail the events that take place in Chernobyl, at the Lenin nuclear power plant, near the town of Prypiat. The series does not content itself with aligning the facts and avoids the “Wikipedia page” effect, in particular thanks to remarkable character writing and brilliant staging. Showrunner Craig Mazin (current showrunner of the highly anticipated adaptation of The Last of Us) gives substance to the story and through a few brilliant ideas manages to emotionally immerse the viewer in the horror of the catastrophe. Several scenes and dialogues come from testimonies of the Belarusian writer Svetlana Alexievitch.

Succession

Succession is the quintessential Shakespearian series. It tells the story of the Roy family, owners of one of the largest conglomerates in the United States and their battle for control of the company. The first three seasons of Succession are available in a DVD box on La Fnac at the price of 25 €.

As in a play by William Shakespeare, especially King Leartragedy quickly invites itself into farce in Succession. The series is in itself rather classic in what it seeks to tell. But the strength instilled in the story by the characters, their cruelty, but also their flaws, gives the series the tragicomic necessary to make Succession a remarkable series. His writing and directing bring the necessary emotion to counterbalance the pervasive cynicism of the series. Still ongoing, with a season 4 planned for this year, the first three seasons of Succession gave us some of the finest television moments of recent years.
