• Apple is in the top 5 of the easiest smartphone brands to repair
  • The Google Pixel 7 is the worst of the moment
  • Sony also ranks dead last

Did you think that iPhones were the most difficult mobiles to repair? Well, not really. Indeed, according to a new classification carried out by Electronics Hub, it is rather Sony the worst pupil in the matter. The methodology to reach this conclusion is based on data from iFixit, a site specializing in teardowns of smartphones in good and due form, with supporting video. On the platform, you can also find kits to replace a screen or a battery yourself, without resorting to the exorbitant prices of specialized technicians.

According Electronics Hub, Sony, therefore, would require its users on average thirty-five minutes to repair their mobile phone themselves. And in more than nine out of ten cases, the procedure is considered “difficult”. By way of comparison, Apple certainly requires more than an hour per manipulation on average, but the techniques requested would be easier to master. This is probably explained, because the Cupertino giant has recently set up a whole system to, precisely, offer everyone to install a slab without the intervention of a third party, at home.

A still chaotic situation

Still, Apple’s repair efforts would be far from enough. The report produced by Electronics Hub indeed demonstrates that although the firm at the apple has actually improved in recent years, Google is going from bad to worse, the same at Motorola. At a time when consciences want to be increasingly aware of the consequences of waste on our environmental future, there is something to question here.

There was a time, manufacturers still tried to offer modular smartphones – and even connected watches for that matter. But Google’s Project Ara will be stopped in 2016, the fault of the costs seem too high. Phonebloks, for its part, will have been criticized for its non-replaceable RAM and processor. The path therefore seems clear for the reconditioned market, in full growth.

Alternative: return and recycle

Indeed, today, platforms such as Amazon or Back Market offer high-end smartphones (sometimes just released) with 20 to 30% reduction on average, because used. A booming sector, where Apple would monopolize no less than 49% of sales according to Counterpoint Research.

Tim Cook’s company also offers a program called Trade In, where it is a question of returning your old mobile in order to obtain a voucher in exchange, which can then be used when ordering a new laptop.
