Although Charles became king immediately after Elizabeth II died in September last year, it is only now that he will be crowned. Royalty from all over the world will attend the ceremony, including the Swedish king and the crown princess. Almost the entire British royal family will also be in attendance, even Prince Harry.
70 years since Elizabeth II was crowned
The country is expected to celebrate the event in a big way – the last time a monarch was crowned in Great Britain was in 1953 when Charles III’s mother Elizabeth II became queen. The royal family has announced that many of the traditional elements from that ceremony will also be found at Charles’ coronation – but that they have also modernized and shortened some things.
Among other things, the coronation will have elements of several religions and languages in addition to Christianity and English. Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and Sikh leaders will attend the service. And hymns and prayers in Welsh, Scottish Gaelic and Irish will feature, according to the Church of England.
