Who is the judge appointed to the case of Trump who has already punished his followers

WASHINGTON DC – Former President Donald Trump is scheduled to appear this Thursday before federal judge for the District of Columbia Tanya Chutkan in relation to the charges he faces for allegedly trying to intervene in the 2020 presidential election.

The 61-year-old judge, born in Jamaica, was nominated for her post by former President Barack Obama.

As reported Associated PressChutkan is a magistrate known for her strong hand against the supporters of the former president who stormed the federal Capitol on January 6, 2021.

The judge often handed down prison sentences related to the Capitol assault that are harsher than prosecutors recommended, according to an AP analysis.

Chutkan has sentenced at least 38 people convicted of crimes related to the riots on Capitol Hill. All 38 received prison terms ranging from 10 days to more than five years.

THE CASE AGAINST TRUMP

Trump was charged Tuesday with federal felonies for his persistent efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election in the two months before his supporters’ violent storming of the Capitol.

THE JUDGE HAS ALREADY RULED AGAINST THE FORMER PRESIDENT

Chutkan has ruled against Trump before in a separate case related to the storming of the Capitol. In November 2021, she denied her request to block the release of documents to the January 6 committee of the House of Representatives.
