The crash of the plane in Nepal left at least 68 victims. One of the people who found death was Jannet Sandra Palavecino, a woman from Neuquén who was traveling to mountaineering in the peaks of the Himalayas.
The 57-year-old woman was one of 72 people on board the Yeti Airlines ATR 72 that crashed abruptly while trying to land in Pokhara, a tourist town in central Nepal: the crash site was a gorge between two hills near the city airport.
The flight, coming from Kathmandu, the Nepalese capital, crashed shortly before 11 local time (2:15 Argentine time) near Pokhara, in the center of the country, where it was supposed to land. This city is an important crossing point for foreign pilgrims and mountaineers.
After learning the news, the local authorities released the list of passengers, among whom was an Argentine: Jannet Sandra Palavecino.

As it turned out, the woman was one of the owners of the Hotel Suizo, located in the city of Neuquén. She is a tourist from Neuquén who was in the Asian country to practice one of her passions: mountaineering.
The trip to Nepal to climb the famous Himalayan peaks was one of the dreams that the Patagonian had and at the beginning of 2023 it was able to fulfill it: however, the fantasy ended in tragedy. “I remember when you told me your plan. Hug to heaven. All my love for the family and the boys,” Claudina Novelli, a friend of Palavecino, wrote on social networks.

The governor of Neuquén, Omar Gutiérrez, wrote on his Twitter account: “Jannet Palavecino, may you rest in peace. We will miss you and always keep you in our memory. My greetings and condolences to all the family and affection.”
The tourist organization Copahue Extremo also sent its condolences on social networks: “It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Jannet Palavecino. An enormous person and a great collaborator in the organization of Copahue Extremo. Our condolences to family and friends. Goodbye dear Jannet.” and admiration for a powerful woman who lived and died fulfilling her dreams,” wrote one of the woman’s friends on Instagram.
How is the aviation industry in Nepal?
Nepal’s aviation industry has grown a lot in recent years, both in the transport of goods and tourists, according to the AFP agency. However, due to the lack of training of personnel and maintenance problems, companies often suffer from security issues. The European Union forbade therefore all Nepalese carriers enter their airspace.
The Himalayan country also boasts some of the most remote and tricky tracks in the world, flanked by snow-capped peaks that make approaching them challenging even for experienced pilots.
The companies indicate that Nepal does not have infrastructure that allows accurate weather forecasts to be established, particularly in the most remote regions and with difficult mountainous relief, where fatal accidents have been recorded in recent years. This Sunday is the deadliest accident in Nepal since 1992, when the 167 people who were traveling aboard a Pakistan International Airlines plane died when it crashed near Kathmandu.
