April 2023 started with everything after Warner Bros. released the second trailer of ‘Barbie’, Greta Gerwig’s film that has us with expectations through the roof with the recent look at the world of ‘Barbie Land’ and all the characters that we will find there.

Beyond the promotional posters (which you can also do) or seeing Michael Cera in the cast of the movie ‘Barbie’, one of the things that caught our attention was listen to the song “Fun Fun Fun” by the Beach Boys in the trailer.

The second trailer for the movie ‘Barbie’ arrived a few days ago

And we can say that many (or most of us) I expected the ‘Barbie’ movie to be musicalized with the song “Barbie Girl” by the Danish group Aquaa song that became a hit in the year 1997 and which many associate with the famous doll.

However, it seems that we will be left with only the “Hi Barbie, Hi Ken” what Margot Robbie y Ryan Gosling pronounced at the beginning of the second trailer, as there are two alleged (and very reasonable) reasons why “Barbie Girl” will not appear in the “Barbie” movie.

And many wondered why Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” did not play

The first and perhaps most obvious is the lawsuit that Aqua had with Mattel a few years ago, The same that left the toy company quite frustrated, since its attempts to try to censor the Danish group’s song at that time were in vain.

As we told you in the story behind Aqua’s song “Barbie Girl”, the idea of creating this song began when Søren Rasted, leader of the band, went to an art exhibition kitsch in Copenhagenwhere he saw several Barbie dolls in a world.

The song “Barbie Girl” was a hit in the 90s, but Mattel didn’t like it

It made me think about ‘life in plastic, it’s fantastic’…. I thought that was a great line.”Rasted said in an interview with Rolling Stone, where he detailed how was the process of writing and recording one of the eurodance hits most remembered from the 90s.

Although Aqua’s success was imminent with “Barbie Girl”, that was not to the liking of many. Especially the executives of Mattel, who considered the lyrics mocking the Barbie doll and the Danish band tried to hang on to the name to be famous.

But it brought him a lawsuit with Mattel that lasted for several years.

Although Aqua mentioned that the song was about accepting oneself, “Barbie Girl” also ironically talked about plastic surgery and sexual connotations. Something the toy company didn’t like.

Mattel sued Aqua’s label for violation of trademark rights and the sexual trivialization of a children’s toy. A legal battle that lasted several years and which the group won thanks to the fact that it was a satire and that it supported freedom of expression.

“Barbie Girl” would not enter the movie ‘Barbie’ either because of the content of its lyrics

Explained the facts it is clear why Mattel did not bet on the song “Barbie Girl” for the tape. However, others suggest that another reason could be the content of the letter that does not fit within the film directed by Greta Gerwig.

Several users realized that, like other films directed by Greta, ‘Barbie’ will have a feminist look. Something that we can verify when we see the promotional posters where all the Barbie have various professions (like the doll) and the Ken are simply Ken.

Since Greta Gerwig will put her feminist vision in the ‘Barbie’ movie

That being said it would be ironic to put a song where Barbie is painted as a silly girl. And we don’t say it, but the same lyrics of the song that say something like “I’m a blond bimbo girl in a fantasy world. Dress me up, make it tight, I’m your dolly”.

In Spanish that means “I’m a ‘bimbo girl’ in a fantasy world. Dress me tight, I’m your dolly”. And the term “Bimbo” is not for bread, but to talk about an attractive, sexualized young woman and considered unintelligent or very naive.

Surely for Greta Gerwig (and from what we have seen in the advances of ‘Barbie’)that is not the image you are looking for for the character of Margot Robbie and the other actresses on the tape, so it seems that “Barbie Girl” will not be on the soundtrack. What do you think?
