• Avatar 2: The Waterway will find its way to streaming on June 7th
  • Media chronology obliges, France will have to wait a little longer…
  • … and even much longer in reality

Launched in cinemas at the very end of last year, the film Avatar 2: The Way of the Water has accumulated more than 14 million admissions in France, garnering more than 136 million euros. A habit for James Cameron in France, which offers the first three places in the ranking with regard to the films having made the best receipts in France, with Avatar 2, Titanic and the first Avatar. In total, Avatar 2 grossed over $2.32 billion worldwide.

Avatar 2 on the way to Disney+! Yes, but…

This Monday, May 15, the official Disney + account proudly announced the arrival of the feature film on its platform, from June 7. Excellent news therefore for all subscribers to the service, who will therefore be able to (re)discover the film with all the comfort of the family sofa and/or a home-cinema installation worthy of the name.

However, it should be noted that like a certain Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Empire (which is coming to Netflix very soon), the film signed James Cameron will not be available on the French waves of Disney +. But why?

Blame it on the now famous “media timeline” which imposes a delay of 15 to 17 months between the cinema release of a feature film and its availability in streaming. Also, if Avatar 2: The Way of the Water was launched in France on December 14, we will have to wait until May 2024 to see it land on Disney+.

Disney+ in free shot

Note that this same media chronology does not prevent this same Avatar 2 from being available on VOD, the latter benefiting from a different calendar, which allows the film to be available on demand for a few weeks already.

In the United States, Avatar 2: The Way of the Water will be launched on June 7 on Disney+, but also on the Max platform (formerly HBO Max), this because of an agreement concluded between 20th Century Fox and Disney. 4 years ago already. As for Disney +, the American platform has (again) lost subscribers by the millions this last quarter.

Not content with offering content that has largely disappointed viewers (Willow, Star Wars, etc.), the Disney+ platform has also inflated its prices, and a new price increase is expected in France in the coming months.
