Valve has long tried to expand the target audience for Steam. That didn’t work with the Steam Machines as quasi-consoles for TVs, but the Steam Deck is now enjoying great success. Microsoft apparently takes an example and is working on an optimized UI.

Of course, the Steam Deck has its own operating system, but it is also possible to load Windows 11 – after all, the Valve hardware is not much different than a (Linux) PC in small format. But there are more and more devices of this type (i.e. basically based on the Switch model) that rely entirely on Windows 11.

Why do you need or want the Microsoft operating system at all? The answer is simple: Game Pass. Because the combination of PC and Game Pass brings hundreds of games to the gamer’s device at no additional cost (to the required subscription).

However, the Windows 11 experience on devices of this size and even with this handheld-like operation is far from ideal. Microsoft is also aware of this and is developing a special mode behind the scenes. So far, however, this is not a complete official project of the Redmond-based company, but a work that was created as part of a hackathon. Well-known insider WalkingCat alias @_h0x0d_ has now gotten his hands on a video of this and published it on Twitter (via Windows Central).

Windows handheld mode

A hackathon is an internal event where employees are let off the leash and try various experiments. But good ideas definitely make it onto the big stage.

In this specific case, Microsoft developers have considered how Windows 11 could be better adapted for such gaming devices and have created the “Windows Handheld Mode”. Here, the classic Windows interface is replaced by a specially adapted UI, through which games, but also the necessary Windows features and apps can be reached better and more easily. In a video you can see how this gaming shell for Windows could look like. Microsoft mixes elements of Windows with those of the Xbox interface. The whole thing looks very reduced on individual screenshots, which is of course a conscious and sensible decision.

It is currently unknown whether and when Microsoft will actually implement such a mode, but in view of the group’s gaming activities and the growing importance of this handheld device class, it would not be surprising if the hackathon were not the end of the matter.
