Windows Central has some news about the upcoming File Explorer update in Windows 11 to report, according to which it should not only have a revised search field, but also a redesigned header with a modern file directory field and a new “Home” button. The previous buttons in the header such as “New”, “Copy” and “Paste” are moved to the file/folder view just below the header.

The home page is modernized with a deeper connection to Microsoft 365. A feed of recommended files is displayed at the top, highlighted by larger thumbnails to make it easier to see which files are suggested.

The left-side navigation also gets an update with more modern code, rounded buttons, and more. The details pane also gets a major update to align with the rest of File Explorer, including Microsoft 365 integration and a more engaging experience when viewing file details.

With deeper Microsoft 365 integration, users can see email threads and recent comments on files shared with multiple colleagues or attached via email via the cloud. This information can be viewed directly in the shared files or in the details area.

The innovations could also help File Explorer become more popular with touch screen users. Microsoft is working on upgrading File Explorer with an improved photo viewer. This is to be achieved through the use of a new “Gallery” section where users can mouse over the photos to see larger previews.

There is also speculation that Microsoft wants to integrate the ability to “tag” files into File Explorer. This would allow users to organize and categorize specific files using keywords and colors. According to Windows Central, most of the promised changes could be distributed to all Windows 11 users before the end of 2023.
