Microsoft is now giving its autopatch feature a major update. It is the most significant innovation since the introduction of the function, it said. First and foremost, it also implements functions that users have asked for.

Windows Autopatch was launched last year. The feature ensures that administrators in the corporate environment no longer have to worry about the provision of system updates. In particular, the numerous routine tasks that arose in this context on patch day and when other updates were released are reduced in this way.

Essentially, the function was therefore welcomed by the users, but there was also a clear need for further development. And the Microsoft developers have now complied with this to a large extent. “The theme of this release is responding to real business needs – all because we’ve heard from autopatch customers and prospective customers what they want from the service,” explained Lior Bela, who oversees the feature as product manager.
Grouping made easy

“So here they are: new features, controls and reports, all designed to help IT admins improve security and productivity with less effort,” he continued. For example, updates can only be made available directly for certain autopatch groups, while these updates are rolled out in a staggered manner for others. These various autopatch groups are referred to as “deployment rings”.

More differentiated than before

Administrators can no longer just decide whether patches should be installed automatically or not. In view of the possible problems with your own software, you can, for example, supply normal workplace PCs directly, but not critical systems in certain departments.

The latest autopatch update also brings alerts and notifications when missing or changed policies are detected. Reporting of feature updates and quality updates has also been improved. All innovations are now being tested and presented in a public preview phase. They should then be generally available in July, on the first anniversary of the autopatch function.
