Mónica García, 45, is facing legal charges for offering services to post-operative patients at her Southwest Miami home without a medical license.
The business was known as Oasis Retreatment Miami and functioned as a recovery home for patients who would have undergone plastic surgery. Services included medication, baths, food, and massages at a cost of $250 per night.
A police report announced that Garcia would have been arrested by the Miami-Dade police after allegedly providing post-operative care to 12 women. One of the patients was seen lying on her stomach as she was transported in the back seat of a Honda Civic.
According to the authorities’ report, the businesswoman was also accused of illegally disposing of waste without using a biohazard container.
Mónica García has pleaded not guilty despite the charges she currently faces.
“Many of my followers, many of my clients know the function that we have done,” defended the defendant in an interview with our sister channel NBC 6.
The charges Garcia is facing stem from the fact that recovery homes in Florida require a license from the Department of Health.
The crime of operating a rehabilitation center without a license has serious consequences, explains Doctor Pedro Roig, who adds that operating a center without a license is a high risk for the health of the patients in question.
“Not being regulated, they don’t follow the rules. And by not following the rules, there is a catastrophic potential for very bad events; infections, arrhythmias, bleeding… very dangerous things,” reaffirmed the specialist Pedro Roig.
According to the Better Business Bureau (BBB), Oasis Recovery Home INC is not accredited by the BBB. They received an “F” grade for not responding to their complaints, among other reasons.
This is not the first case of accusation of fraud for service management without the accreditation of a medical license in Miami. In March, police arrested Maidelys Sánchez on similar allegations. The woman admitted that she was guilty and was given 2 years probation.
