A new wave of migrants has arrived in Massachusetts, and the state is relocating them to hotels because shelters are overcrowded and there aren’t enough beds to go around.
The new group of migrants arrived on Friday at the Chelsea Collaborative, where families receive the basics, food, clothing, medicine, personal hygiene items, then they are relocated to a hotel, something that has also become a dilemma because they do not all cities are receptive to the arrival of immigrants.
In the last 48 hours, the Chelsea Collaborative has received more than 250 immigrants, mostly of Haitian origin, including children and pregnant women.
Vega says she is concerned that their resources will be drained, especially for the residents they already help day in and day out.
“My biggest challenge and fear is that because we’re doing this, I don’t want people to think that Massachusetts has all these resources. We have just survived a global pandemic.”
Myrlande DesRosiers is a member of the Everett Haitian Community Center, and on Friday afternoon she was supporting the new group of Haitian immigrants – around 40 people – who arrived at the Chelsea Collaborative, she says they brought them typical food from their country and They try to give you emotional support.
Vegas says that the situation is critical, the shelters are not enough and it is necessary to relocate these people to hotels, however, she is concerned about what will happen to them next.
Through a statement, the Massachusetts government acknowledged that they do not have enough beds in the shelters and that they are contributing funds to the Chelsea Collaborative to cover the basic expenses of these immigrants.
