Would you like to practice fishing? New York offers days to do this activity for free

NEW YORK — If you love fishing or would like to try the sport, New York State is hosting its second free fishing weekend of the year this June 24-25, Governor Kathy Hochul announced.

Fishing is considered one of the most therapeutic outdoor activities, making it an ideal activity for all New Yorkers looking to get out and enjoy the great outdoors.

“As summer approaches, fishing in New York’s world-class waters is possibly one of the best ways to spend the weekend,” said Governor Hochul. “New York Free Fishing Days provide New Yorkers and visitors alike the opportunity to enjoy the abundant natural beauty found in every corner of New York.”

New York’s Free Fishing Program began in 1991 to give those who may not fish the opportunity to try the rewarding sport at no cost and learn about a new hobby. This no-cost opportunity also encourages individuals to support the management of the state’s freshwater fisheries by purchasing a New York fishing license.

Additional Free Fishing Days in 2023 include: National Fish and Hunt Day on September 23 and Veterans Day on November 11. During these designated Free Fishing Days, residents and non-residents can fish freshwater for free without a fishing license .

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and its partners also hold free fishing events throughout the year. In addition to learning about local fishing opportunities, participants are taught about what fish to catch, how to cast a fishing rod, fishing safety, water resource management, and fishing regulations. Upcoming events include June 22 in Islip, June 24 in Orchard Park, June 29 in Manhattan, and July 5 in Queens. You can find a complete list here.

Free Fishing Day participants are reminded that while the requirement for a freshwater fishing license does not apply during Free Fishing Days, all other fishing rules still apply.
