Former mayor of Aguas Buenas will be sentenced today for bribery scheme

The former mayor of Aguas Buenas, Javier García Pérez will be sentenced this Wednesday in the Federal Court of Hato Rey, for a bribery scheme.

García Pérez pleaded guilty on February 10 for having accepted cash payments in exchange for the award of municipal contracts and the payment of invoices related to said contracts.

According to court documents, the events occurred from 2017 to 2021. The former mayor received and accepted cash payments from two businessmen in exchange for granting them municipal contracts for waste removal services, asphalting, paving and rubble removal services, and payment of pending invoices for the contracts.

García Pérez received at least $32,000 in cash payments from August 2020 to September 2021 from the two businessmen.

The former mayor was arrested on May 5, 2022, the same day that the former mayor of Humacao, Reinaldo Vargas, was arrested for committing similar crimes. A day later, the mayor submitted his resignation.

“My entire family is strengthened,” said the former mayor of Aguas Buenas.
