Obsidian is currently the most prolific studio among the 23 members of Xbox Game Studios. Last year, he offered Microsoft his only two first-party exclusives by releasing the full version of Grounded and Pentiment. In parallel, the developers are at work on Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 but according to the CEO of the studio, Fergus Urquhart, Obsidian had many other ideas in its boxes including a game that could have become a direct rival of God of War.

The Obsidian Entertainment teams are not short of ideas

In a long interview with reporters from NME, Fergus Urquhart discusses many topics about his work at Obsidian Entertainment, starting with the impact of the takeover by Microsoft. He also took the opportunity to discuss several games on which the studio had started working. If this is information that is more anecdotal, the projects mentioned once again show the desire of the creators of Pillars of Eternity to think outside the box.

First, we learn that Obsidian has begun to develop a title inspired by Jules Verne’s “Journey to the Center of the Earth” and whose structure would have made it a direct rival to PlayStation’s God of War. If we will not know why it was abandoned, Fergus Urquhart admits that an RPG from The Walking Dead never saw the light of day after failing to find a publisher.

Original and even surprising ideas

The animated series Rick and Morty could also have been entitled to its video game adaptation, but this time it was Microsoft who put an end to the project. Even more surprisingly, the studio had an idea for a title based on the American television show “Cops” which follows the daily lives of police officers in the United States in real time. Again, Obsidian found no sympathetic ear to his project.

It must be said that this last concept is surprising to say the least. We are already a long way from the heroic-fantasy RPGs that made the studio famous. If we will therefore never see this video game version of “Cops”, Obsidian already has a busy schedule and there are undoubtedly other projects that we have not yet heard of. Fergus Urquhuart, he has already expressed several times his desire to give a sequel to Fallout: New Vegas. It remains to be seen whether he will be able to make his wish come true.
