Yankees run out of starters? Luis Severino went to the bullpen due to his poor performances

The Dominican starter Luis Severino is having a forgettable 2023 season with the New York YankeesAfter starting the season on the disabled list, he has not been able to have good performances from the mound.

Severino made his debut in May and since then has had disastrous individual numbers that have resulted in negative results for the organization.

The right-handed pitcher accumulates two wins for six losses, in the 61.2 innings he has been pitching, he has a 7.74 PCL and a 1.85 WHIP. During his last six appearances where his ERA has been 11.22, where he has allowed 32 earned runs in just 25.2 innings of action.

A little less than two months into the season and in the precarious position the Yankees are in, their options aren’t many. Severino would go on to be used as an opener and brought in from the bullpen behind other pitchers who start games, but this would mean using a bullpen that has been heavily worked over all year.

Historically, Severino has a record of 52 wins and 35 losses with a 3.77 ERA1.18 WHIP and 763 strikeouts in 699.2 total innings pitched with the Yankees.

Severino acknowledges his difficulties

After his last bad performance against the Chicago White Sox, Severino declared: “I’m having the worst year of my life in baseball.. I’m not sure (what else I can do), but right now, I’m willing to do anything to improve myself. I love being a starter, but right now this year it hasn’t been working out.”

And he admitted: “I have to continue; I’m not going to stop here. I’m going to keep trying to improve.”.

For his part, the manager of the Yankees, Aaron Boone indicated: “Obviously it is difficult, and Sevy feels it. I know the real Severino, and he is usually a dominant pitcher.”

Severino said he was a little surprised when the Yankees told him he was coming out of the bullpen. But considering his troubles in the first inning, he thought it was “a good idea.”

Ian Hamilton: new starter for the Yankees

After the bad outings of Luis Severino, the Yankees decided that Ian Hamilton would take his place in the rotation to try to lower the pressure on the Dominican pitcher a bit.

In the season Hamilton has some very good numbers with a 1.67 ERA in 37.2 innings.. Hamilton’s entry into the rotation is expected to provide more security for the New York Yankees’ starting staff.

Until now, only Gerrit Cole has shown himself to be the only consistent starter for the Yankees, since Néstor Cortés Jr. has also been injured and has not been able to contribute to the cause of the Bronx.
