FC Bayern had to replace Manuel Neuer in the winter. The choice fell on Yann Sommer. But there was probably another prominent candidate.
When Manuel Neuer broke his lower leg in early December, the Bayern bosses had to make a decision: either substitute Sven Ulreich step in or a new player will come to Munich. First, Alexander Nübel was the favorite, who is still on loan to AS Monaco until next summer. A demolition of that loan was in the room.
But the decision fell neither on Nübel nor on Ulreich. Yann Sommer switched from Borussia Mönchengladbach to the Isar for more than eight million euros. But as the “Kicker” now reports, the Swiss was not the only candidate with whom it became concrete. The Dane Kasper Schmeichel is said to have already conducted negotiations with Bayern Munich.
Schmeichel was the favorite of some of those responsible because he was said to have been willing to sign only for half a year – Manuel Neuer’s downtime. Summer’s contract with Bayern, on the other hand, runs until 2025.
Nagelsmann wanted summer
Schmeichel is the first-choice goalkeeper for the French first division club OGC Nice and also played for his home country Denmark at the World Cup in Qatar last winter. The 36-year-old is very experienced and has played almost 700 competitive games in his career. With Leicester City, the Dane surprisingly won the English championship in 2016. The son of goalkeeper legend Peter Schmeichel has only been playing in France since last summer. He was reportedly not really happy in the winter due to criticism from Nice fans. That’s another reason why he was apparently ready to sign with Bayern.
But the Munich coach at the time, Julian Nagelsmann, wanted summer for the goal, according to the “kicker”. Also because this was a solution beyond the season. At the beginning of his time in Munich, Sommer also knew how to convince. However, the Swiss is currently in a small form crisis and, like some of the people in front of him, seems increasingly unsettled.
It is currently rather unclear whether he will be the number one goalkeeper for Bayern beyond the summer, when Manuel Neuer is back.
