From time to time, it is increasingly common to see the name of Yoss Bones at festivals or important stages. And he has defended this very well, collaborating with a lot of artists from different genres and above all, with the arrival of his first studio album, boneswhich launched in 2022 and that undoubtedly confirms that She is one of the most interesting Mexican artists today.
Taking advantage of the fact that this August 17 is being presented for the first time at the Lunario of the National Auditorium, we had the chance to chat for a while with Yoss Bones, who told us a little about its beginnings and the evolution that has happened (as an artist and person), as well as this show that is extremely special and important to her.
The beginnings of a unique artist
Yoss Bones is a songwriter, rapper and singer originally from Salamanca, Guanajuato.. As usually happens to all those who get into music, the first thing that marked this artist or that she remembers musically speaking are the things that were put in her house. Although yes, At first, he did not plan to step on stage or even compose his own music..
“My first influences were what my bosses listened to, like church bands and stuff, although I always listened to a bit of everything. But when I grew up, I was marked by several very different artists, like Amy Winehouse, Beyoncé and Aretha Franklin. I remember when I heard Aretha I was shocked. I think that thanks to them I became more interested in music, although being very honest, I never thought of dedicating myself seriously or professionally to this, life took me there when I began to know and get involved in the hip-hop scene in Guanajuato”.
The birth of Yoss Bones and the importance of an alter ego
Like many other artists, Yocelin –as this artist is actually called– decided to use the name Yoss Bones when dedicating herself fully to music. This adopting an alter ego was something very personal, because according to what he told us, I wanted to paint the line very well between the woman behind the music and the one who performs in front of the public. Of course, without taking away the authenticity of what he does.
“Many think that Yoss Bones, that wild girl who goes up to sing in front of all the people, is me, but in reality it is just a figure that believes me to be able to get on stage. The truth is that I am a very different person from the one they see when I perform live, deep down I am a quiet person, who enjoys staying at home with their cats or going to the tianguis for a gordita and looking for clothes in the bale ”.
“I almost don’t do it anymore, because I have more and more commitments and tours, but I wanted to have this alter ego so that my artist version wouldn’t eat Yocelin, you know? I needed that to keep my feet on the ground and I think it’s very important, because when you lose the center, little by little you go into a tailspin. I consider it important to separate very well those parts that coexist within me, that are not in conflict with each other”.
The peculiar process of his first album: ‘Bones’
In 2022 and after releasing several singles that broke it on digital platforms, Yoss Bones released his debut album, bones, where through 11 songs he tells us the story of a very particular relationship. And although it seems that he had everything coldly calculated with this record, the reality is that everything arose in the process.
“If I’m honest, I didn’t really have an idea of how to make a record, what’s more, I didn’t even know what it was going to be called, the only thing I knew was to compose songs. The truth was that it was somewhat difficult, particularly on the technical side, because I swear I got to the studio and saw a lot of little buttons, but I couldn’t imagine what they were for or what they were used for”.
“However, things happened and I thank the people who accompanied me in this process because, without them, this would not have been possible. It’s an album that I love, although it’s not perfect because it has many flaws and after all this time, I think I could have done things better. But either way, I look at it with a lot of love.”
Humility opens the doors of great spaces
In 2023, Yoss Bones was the only female act to appear on the main stage at Vive Latino, alongside Neto Peña.. And it’s just that kind of steps, as well as performing at festivals in Mexico, Latin America and even Europe that have made this artist a name in different parts of the world. However, she is very aware that to be given the opportunity to succeed in music and in general, you must handle yourself with humility.
“I have always thought that in this life you have to be humble, because that opens doors for you everywhere, but you should never let them pass you by, because it is something that happens a lot in the industry, and it is one thing to be humble and another is to be an asshole. You have to be aware of what you do, and do it with great enthusiasm, it does not matter if you perform for 10 or thousands of people, you must remember who you are and what motivates you to do what you like, in this case music . Above all, you always have to lose your fear of doing those things you want, because we have very little time in this life.”
“I also believe that now I have a great responsibility with what I say, because I can take a microphone to speak and say things that I feel, but that can also mean something to others. If I have learned anything, it is that success is not about money or those things, it is having people who love you and who care about you as a person beyond the artist. When you have that, that’s when you realize what the real success is behind all of this.”
The first presentation of Yoss Bones at the Lunario of the National Auditorium
As we mentioned from the beginning, This August 17, Yoss Bones will perform for the first time neither more nor less than at the Lunario of the National Auditorium. “I must confess that I am a little nervous, because for me, it is entering the world of auditoriums and it is something new for me. But I’m also very happy because it means my music is connecting with race, you know? That they do like what I do and that it is reaching a lot of people. This concert will be a celebration, we are working together to put together a show that will be on stage, where in addition to playing old and new songs, we are going to include special guests that I cannot reveal yet. But we are also putting together a show with drag queen dancers and more, you cannot miss it”.
