While those present loudly counted down the countdown, the monarch looked questioningly around the darkened hall while Camilla whispered something in his ear. After a little push, Charles then aimed his index finger at the big red button – and missed. Camilla only half hit the button, but still, it was enough to start the light show.

The slightly unsuccessful action provided the best entertainment on social media, but there was also mockery and malice for King Charles. “This guy is our king,” one Twitter user wrote. “Didn’t he really hit the button?” “He usually asks his servant for something like that,” suspects an ESC fan.
