Young man arrested for allegedly participating in underground car race in Harlingen

Marcos Antonio Siles, 25, was arrested after allegedly participating in clandestine races on FM 509 in the Harlingen area, Cameron County Sheriff Eric Garza reported Monday.

The incident occurred on June 14, when a policeman noticed what was happening and made a traffic stop.

The officer was on patrol when he observed a gray Dodge Charger and a red Chevy Camaro heading south on FM 509. The officer observed the two vehicles allegedly running alongside each other on the highway.

Meanwhile, both vehicles were speeding toward FM 106. Additionally, the driver of the Dodge Charger was traveling the wrong way. According to police, both vehicles reached speeds of up to 90 miles per hour.

At that moment the policeman ordered them to stop. The Dodge Charger stopped, but the driver of the Chevy Camaro kept going and fled the scene.

The driver of the Dodge Charger was identified as 25-year-old Marcos Antonio Siles. Preliminary investigation found that the Charged was “gutted,” meaning that the passenger and rear seat had been removed as a modification for car racing.

Siles was placed under arrest and charged with participating in a freeway auto race. The young man was booked at the Carrizalez Rucker Detention Center. The investigation continues.
