After two years of the compulsory Corona break, 28,500 visitors took part in the traditional Christmas singing of the Bundesliga soccer team 1. FC Union Berlin.

The event in the sold-out An der Alten Försterei stadium suffered from heavy rain in the second part on Friday evening, which particularly affected the visitors inside. However, this hardly spoiled the fun of the fans.

Classics such as “Good evening beautiful evening”, “Your children are coming” and “Oh Tannenbaum” could be heard by candlelight, as well as club songs. Union communications chief Christian Arbeit also played the trumpet himself, accompanied by his father and mother on trombone and clarinet.

For the finale, thousands of people chanted “Tomorrow, children, there will be something”, followed by the fan anthem “We are Union” by the Berlin band Krispin.

Visitors to the 20th edition included Union defender Paul Jaeckel and ex-Unioners Jan Glinker, Ronny Nikol, Björn Brunnemann and Björn Kopplin.

The tradition has existed at Union since 2003. 89 supporters had gathered for the premiere 19 years ago without permission. In the original of all Christmas carols in football stadiums, the fans still sing themselves with the support of the Köpenicker Emmy-Noehter-Gymnasium.

The Grünau pastor Ulrich Kastner read the Christmas story again. A fan dressed as Santa Claus looked with irony and pride at the most successful year in the club’s history. (tsp, dpa)
