"Your subscription has expired": Netflix customers are alerted to a new scam

“If you receive an email or SMS asking you to provide your Netflix account email, phone number, password, or payment method, it’s probably not from Netflix.” The American streaming platform company warns on its own website that messages that reach us on its behalf should be distrusted. Although impersonations of these large companies are not something new, from time to time new scams continue to appear that take advantage of the users of these companies that have thousands of subscribers.

The Internet User Safety Office, an agency of the National Institute of Cybersecurity, has detected this summer a massive ‘phishing’ campaign using the name of Netflix. The system is simple: by means of an email, scammers impersonate Netflix warning that the subscription has expired and that you can extend it for free for 90 days. The problems come when trying to renew that supposed subscription; that’s when they ask you to provide personal and bank details in a form. “We do not withdraw any amount from your account,” says the message in capital letters, with the aim of giving potential victims more security.

Once you access the attached link, the Netflix logos and the same offer mentioned in the email are displayed, as well as an ‘Extend for free’ button to proceed to enter the credit card data to supposedly validate the user account.

From the Internet User Security Office (OSI) they warn that the web link does not correspond to the official Netflix page and that the fraudulent emails of this campaign can be identified by the subjects: “_Extend-your… Free Account” , “Confirmation” or “Enjoy a free 90-day Netflix extension.”

Experts recommend not opening the email, marking it as ‘spam’ and deleting it. If you have entered your credit card or personal data, you must contact the bank to cancel the credit card used.

In case of fraud, the OSI recommends collecting evidence of fraud, saving emails and screenshots of the process and contacting the State Security Forces and Bodies providing the evidence, and reporting the facts.
