Formal jobs in the southeastern region of Mexico have shown an increase higher than the national average during the month of April, a significantly higher variation in the states of Quintana Roo and Campeche, leaving Yucatán in the last of the three states of the peninsula.

According to the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), as of April 30, 2023, 21,820,291 jobs have been registered throughout Mexico, of which 86.1 percent are permanent and 13.9 percent are temporary.
The monthly growth in figures with respect to last year has been 24 thousand 11 jobs, variation is equivalent to a rate of 0.1%.

At the peninsular level, by the end of the previous month, Quintana Roo reported a percentage growth of 8.4 percent, with a total of 491,986, placing the Mexican Caribbean entity in third place at the national level with the highest growth.

It is followed by Campeche, which was ranked ninth in the national ranking, with a growth of 5.2 percent compared to April 2022, encompassing a total of 140,182 formal jobs.

In last place at the peninsular level is Yucatan, which compared to the month of April of the previous year only grew 5.1 percent in terms of the generation of new jobs, reaching a total of 421,816 jobs registered with the IMSS.

Sectors with more formal jobs

In the Yucatan peninsula, the economic sector that employs the most people is services to companies, individuals and the home, encompassing 342,492 people distributed among the three entities, of which 252,908 are from Quintana Roo, 70,439 from Yucatan and 19,145 are from Campeche.

In the same sense, it is followed by the commerce sectors with 189 thousand 217 employees, the construction industry with 149 thousand 38 and social and community services with 146 thousand 240 people formally employed among the three states of the Yucatan peninsula.

Among the three entities, the average salary is 466.84 pesos per day, with 528,861 people registered with a salary of between 2 and 3 units of measurement and updated daily.

Separately, the highest average salary is found in Campeche, reaching up to 587.76 pesos per day, followed by Quintana Roo with 459.36 pesos and Yucatán with 435.56 pesos per day.

In the three entities, the phenomenon of the salary gap continues to be registered, however, it is more noticeable in Campeche, where men earn 640.71 pesos and women 471.19; then Yucatan with 443.83 pesos over 421.45 pesos; and Quintana Roo with 461.84 pesos for men and 455.17 pesos for women, for the same jobs.

Employers in the Southeast

The IMSS reports at the end of April this year a total of 49 thousand 49 people registered as employers, the majority of these (18 thousand 214) employing between 2 and five people, followed by those who employ between 6 and 50 people (15 thousand 67) and those who only have a worker in third place (12 thousand 866).

Of the employers registered in the peninsula, 21,577 are from Yucatan, 21,46 from Quintana Roo, and 6,426 are in Campeche.

Regarding the incorporation of domestic workers, in Campeche only 159 people have been registered, the majority being between 55 and 60 years of age.

In Quintana Roo so far, 330 people who are dedicated to household chores have been registered, the majority being of the same age range and Cancun representing the city with more of these employees in the formality.

For its part, Yucatán reports the affiliation of 1,611 people who are dedicated to these jobs, all of whom are registered in the city of Mérida.
