• Zoom, as part of a response to the effects of the pandemic, has established itself as the main video calling platform on the market.

  • In Mexico, the home office provided various benefits to 74 percent of workers, such as saving time and money.

  • The value of the Metaverse amounted, in 2021, to 500 billion dollars, a figure that could increase fivefold by the year 2030.

Zoom, as WhatsApp and even TikTok are doing, continues its expansion into the metaverse and creates new customizable avatars.

Within everything that happened during the health emergency proposed by Covid-19, one of the great bulwarks was the home officewhich became the lifeline of companies to such an extent that, currently, in several companies there is a trend towards a hybrid model.

Today, Several companies in Mexico are already considering returning to face-to-face workafter a period in which the pandemic led them to seek refuge in virtual space.

It is nothing new, because, in fact, since 2021, some companies tried “luck” with hybrid work (one day at home and one day in the office), as a way to return, little by little, to the “old normal”.

Nevertheless, the effectiveness of the hybrid model has given rise to the fact that the home office continue to be one of the main trends towards the post-pandemic future.

And it is that, in addition, official data indicate that, in Mexico, the home office provided various benefits to workerssuch as saving time and money in trips to the office, an advantage that was mentioned by almost three quarters (74 percent) of those interviewed.

In this context, Zoom became the setting for school classes, work meetings, calls with friends and/or family, and, in general, an extremely important space given the scarcity of human contact in the world.

While it is true that Zoom already existed before the emergence of Covid-19, 2020 meant the ideal space for the platform to grow, reach more users and position itself as one of the top video calling sites in the market.

Zoom continues with its plans towards the metaverse with customizable avatars

Without a doubt, the metaverse is here to stay. In this context, in the coming years, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) will be the big bet in a society that will continue its rise towards digitization (eCommercehybrid work, online classes, etc.),

This is what the study reveals “Virtual reality and augmented reality: the Metaverse as a new opportunity for business”which was published by the EAE Business School -international business school-.

Thus, following the metaverse trend, Zoom is launching new features on its platform, among which are customizable avatars and, in addition, new features that seek to improve the video call experience, adding news in the messages, such as the reactions in the chats and the questions and answers.

In the case of avatars, Zoom has “numerous combinations” of customization lists so that the user shows more of his “virtual self”. Based on this premise, Internet users will be able to create and store various avatars so that they can be used during video calls.

The technology presented by the platform delivers movements and facial expressions, as a way to appear more “dynamic” and not just post a static profile image. “It’s a more engaging alternative to static profile photos to add fun and energy to your meetings,” Zoom said.

Currently, we have witnessed how brands such as Gucci, Nike, Victoria’s Secret, H&M, Ralph Lauren, among others, are already adapting to the Metaverse, providing a new experience for consumers.
