Apple marked a historic milestone by announcing the integration of artificial intelligence into its devices, a move highly anticipated by OpenAI technology enthusiasts.

At its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024, Apple revealed its partnership with OpenAI, a bold step that not only introduces new AI capabilities to its products, but also redefines the company’s approach to generative artificial intelligence.

The company introduced “Apple Intelligence”, a generative artificial intelligence system designed specifically for its devices and applications.

This integration not only includes Apple’s own developments, but also a direct collaboration with OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT.

The importance of this announcement lies in the expectation generated by Apple’s foray into generative AI. The company, known for its vertical integration, surprises by collaborating with a third party like OpenAI.

However, this move promises to be beneficial as it will allow iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 users to access the capabilities of GPT-4 without abandoning their regular apps.

One of the most notable features of this integration is that ChatGPT will be available in various experiences within iOS, iPadOS, and macOS.

Users will be able to interact with artificial intelligence to make queries, generate content and even create images. Siri, Apple’s virtual assistant, will benefit from this integration, being able to use the intelligence of ChatGPT to offer more precise and contextual responses.

Apple has assured that user privacy will be a priority in this collaboration. Requests cannot be stored by OpenAI and users’ IP addresses will be hidden, thus guaranteeing a high level of security and privacy.

Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering at Apple, highlighted that Apple’s AI will be more efficient thanks to its integration into applications and its knowledge of the user and their context.

For his part, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, expressed his enthusiasm for this partnership, highlighting that both share a commitment to security and innovation.

The ChatGPT integration will be free and will not require an OpenAI account. However, ChatGPT Plus subscribers will be able to link their profiles to take advantage of the paid plan.

This new functionality will be available at the end of this year, marking a before and after in the user experience of Apple devices.

The announcement has generated various reactions, including that of Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, who expressed his reservations about the integration of OpenAI in Apple devices, citing security concerns and ensuring that he will ban them in his offices.

“And visitors will have to leave their Apple devices at the door, where they will be stored in a Faraday cage,” the tycoon added.

Despite these criticisms, analysts consider that Apple’s commitment to generative AI will open new frontiers for the company, positively impacting its products and services.

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, emphasized that the integration of generative AI must be intuitive, easy to use and deeply integrated into product experiences. Furthermore, it must understand and be based on the user’s personal context, always respecting privacy.

The presentation of iOS 18 also included new features such as a redesign of the control center and new customization options.

Apple reinforced its focus on privacy and security, offering users the ability to “lock” apps with Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode. This feature is especially useful for protecting sensitive applications such as banking or insurance.

Text messaging will also be improved, with the ability to send messages via satellite and schedule shipments.

Likewise, Apple showed off updates to its Vision Pro mixed reality headset, which promises to offer more immersive and advanced experiences thanks to improved machine learning.

By introducing generative AI features to its devices, Apple is positioning itself at the forefront of technological innovation.

The ChatGPT integration and new Siri capabilities promise to transform the user experience, while the focus on privacy and security reinforces trust in the company’s products.

This partnership with OpenAI not only propels Apple into the future, but also sets a new standard in the technology industry.
