Biological diversity is threatened by climate change and pollution

MIAMI. – May 22 is International Day of Diversity Biological. In December 1993, the Convention on Biological Diversity came into force, which is based on three essential objectives: The conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of the components of biological diversity, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits that arise from the use of genetic resources.

Biodiversity is the living fabric of our planet. It is the basis of human well-being now and in the future, and its rapid decline threatens nature and people alike. It is vital to transform people’s roles, actions and relationships with biodiversity, to stop and reverse its decline,” says the UNESCO.

The United Nations warns that biological diversity is threatened by several factors such as climate change, invasive species, overexploitation of natural resources, pollution and urbanization. In this context, the responsibility of human actions on the ecosystem has an important weight.

The Director General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, underlines the need for a radical change “in our relationship with nature and other living beings, in order to conceive and build a truly shared world.”

Key strategies

The theme for 2024 of the International Day for Biological Diversity is “Be part of the plan” and its objective is to link all sectors with environmental preservation. The loss of biodiversity affects health, food security, vulnerability to natural disasters, energy security and access to clean water and raw materials, among other aspects.

In order to preserve biodiversity, the UNESCO He outlined a strategy based on three elements: Restoring the relationship between humans and nature and regenerating ecosystems; preserve the harmony of our ecosystems; and amplify the power of youth.
