bittersweet minimum wage increase to $13 an hour

MIAMI.- Florida’s minimum wage will increase to $13 per hour on September 30, as has been happening every year since the approval of the constitutional amendment in 2020, which established the gradual increase in income until it reaches $15 per hour. in 2026.

Following the approval of Amendment 2 in a referendum in November 2020, workers in the Sunshine State have experienced a gradual increase in the minimum wage from $8.56 per hour to the current $12.

The increase on September 30 will be followed by another in September 2025 and September 2026.

In 2026, when the goal of $15 an hour is reached, the increase in the minimum wage in Florida will be marked by the cost of living. That is, it will be adjusted in correspondence with the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

The law also provides that the minimum wage for workers who receive tips is $3.02 per hour lower than that of other employees. That is, as of September 30, 2024, it will be $11.98 per hour.

On the other hand, not all employees benefit from the minimum wage. According to the Department of Labor, certain jobs may earn lower wages, such as administrative employees, commissioned employees, farmers, informal workers, babysitters, students who are working, employees who work assisting disabled or elderly people, and employees of a company. whose income is less than $500 annually. The idea is that these types of services and jobs necessary for vulnerable sectors do not disappear.

Higher wages are always good news, but when the standard of living is so high, driven by the cost of housing, rent, food, fuel and transportation, it doesn’t seem like $13 an hour — $27,040 annually — solve the problem of the most vulnerable.

According to Rent Café, the cost of renting an 892-square-foot apartment in Miami is $2,538 per month, or $30,000 annually. Apparently it will still be necessary to have two jobs.
