Conductor Andrew Davis dies at 80

CHICAGO.- Andrew Davis, an acclaimed director of orchestra Briton who was musical director of the Chicago Lyric Opera and orchestras on three continents, has died. He was 80 years old.

Davis died of leukemia Saturday at the Rusk Institute of Chicago, his representative, Jonathan Brill, of Opus 3 Artists, reported on Sunday.

Davis had dealt with the disease for the past year and a half and two years, but his health deteriorated shortly after he turned 80 on February 2.

Trajectory

He was music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from 1975 to 1988 and of the Glyndebourne Festival in the United Kingdom from 1988 to 2000; chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra from 1989 to 2000; then musical director of the opera Lrica from 2000 to 2021.

He conducted the US National Youth Orchestra in workshops last summer, then at Carnegie Hall in New York and on tour.
