We need a border stabilization plan

MIAMI.- The mayor of New York, Eric Adams, who participated in the Concordia Summit in Miami, called for the implementation of a plan to stabilize the southern border and strongly condemned the actions of the terrorist organization Hamas.

Adams highlighted the need for comprehensive immigration reform at the national level, emphasizing that cities like New York are struggling to cope with the influx of migrants and asylum seekers without adequate support from the federal government.

“Our national immigration policy cannot be based on crossing our fingers and hoping,” Adams said. “We need a border stabilization plan and policies that allow migrants to work while they wait for their cases to be processed.”

According to figures from the mayor, between 200 and 1,000 immigrants are arriving in his city per day. He explained that, among this migratory mass, local authorities have identified Venezuelans and Ecuadorians, who are fleeing problems in their countries of origin.

In recent months, New York has experienced an unprecedented influx of migrants and asylum seekers, creating a humanitarian crisis, compromising the City’s resources.

The ‘Big Apple’ has had to open emergency shelters and resort to hotels to house migrants, with the shelter system operating at capacity.

The mayor also stressed the importance of “social networks” for the integration of immigrants, referring to pre-existing communities, such as family or friends, who offer support and assistance to newcomers.

Adams contrasted the experience of Ukrainian immigrants, who have benefited from a strong Ukrainian network in New York, with that of Venezuelans, who lack a similar network and face greater challenges settling in the city.

“Hamas must be destroyed”

Regarding the conflict in the Middle East, Adams strongly condemned Hamas, calling it a “terrorist organization that must be destroyed.”

He expressed concern about the rise of anti-Semitism globally and praised the New York Police Department for its work in protecting the city’s Jewish community.

“Celebrating Hamas is wrong,” Adams said. “We must allow the hostages to return home and take measures to stop the violence.”

Mayor Adams’ participation in the Concordia Summit highlights the importance of the migration crisis and the fight against terrorism as key issues on the current political agenda.
