Border Patrol seizes more than $3.8 million in cocaine

RIO GRANDE CITY, Texas.- Border Patrol agents from the Rio Grande Valley sector, in coordination with state agencies, successfully prevented a cocaine smuggling attempt this Monday afternoon.

On August 7, agents with the Rio Grande Valley Sector Border Patrol working in conjunction with the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife, in the Rio Grande City area, observed suspected narcotics being delivered to a van parked along the Rio Grande.

As the vehicle was moving away from the river, officers responded to the area and the suspected driver turned south, stopping near the riverbank. The driver exited the vehicle and was observed swimming towards Mexico. In the abandoned truck, the agents discovered two sacks containing 50 bricks of suspected drugs. The total weight of the seized drugs is 121 pounds, with a street value of more than $3.8 million.

The narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.

“Excellent work by our Border Patrol agents working alongside our state partners to keep our communities safe from dangerous drugs,” said Border Patrol Chief Gloria I. Chavez.
