The book “We would have said everything to each other” by Judith Hermann was number 1 on the SWR list of the best in May 2023. A childhood in unconventional circumstances, the divided Berlin, family ties and chosen affinities, long, happy summers by the sea. In her new work, Judith Hermann talks about her writing and her life. She is dedicated to the relationship between truth, invention and mystery and tells in a poetic voice about the middle of life, about friendship, new beginnings and freedom.

The SWR leaderboard has been recommending ten books worth reading every month for more than 40 years. It is not the sales figures that determine the order, but an independent jury of 30 well-known literary critics. They each select four new publications for which they wish as many readers as possible. The novel “Empus” by Olga Tokarczuk took second place in the SWR list of the best in May. Third place goes to Arnold Stadler’s “Somewhere. But by the Sea”.
