A 2-year-old girl from Toulouse, France has been hospitalized after getting an ecstasy pill stuck in her nose. She arrived at the hospital agitated, with “red-colored residue” in her nostril, wheezing and dilated pupils.
The details of the case were published in the medical journal Archives of Pediatrieon Friday (4/14), without identifying any of the family members or the date of the occurrence so as not to expose the patient.

“Unusual Route Poisoning”
The mother told the doctors that the girl found the pill in a box kept above the refrigerator. When she noticed that her daughter had the drug stuck in her nose, she immediately tried to pull it out, but the pill broke and only a piece came out naturally.
The child was taken to the Center Hospitalier Universitaire (CHU) of Toulouse, where doctors attested that she had a heart rate of 148 beats per minute, high blood pressure, wheezing and shallow breathing and dilated pupils. The condition was defined as “ecstasy intoxication by an unusual route”.
The child was in the pediatric intensive care unit (ICU) until the blood pressure subsided and was soon transferred to a general pediatric ward. After being hydrated with saline, the pupils began to contract and returned to normal. Blood pressure was normalized only the next morning, 17 hours after she put the pill in her nose.
The girl was discharged 24 hours after being admitted and is doing well. The case was reported to a judge in France who decided to give custody of the patient to the paternal grandmother.
