9-year-old boy and 8 others injured after shooting at party in northeast DC

Nine people, including a child and a teenager, were injured in a drive-by shooting that targeted a July 4 gathering in northeast DC, police said.

The preliminary report revealed that a person drove a dark-colored SUV in the 4700 block of Meade Street in the Deanwood area and pulled up in front of the party around midnight. At least one person in the van opened fire.

“As he was driving down the street, he pulled over and fired in the direction of some of our residents who were outside,” Assistant Chief Leslie Parsons explained at a news conference.

The DC Fire and Emergency Department rushed several people to hospitals and some victims went by themselves. At least four people are in critical condition and three have non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Among the victims are a 9-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy.

Police are looking for the dark colored SUV. No arrests have been announced.

Authorities believe this was a targeted attack and are asking anyone with photos, videos or other information that could help in the investigation to contact them.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is assisting with the investigation.
