The Medical Imaging Diagnostic Center CIMED incorporated a PET/CT equipment with Siemens technology, to allow the La Plata and Buenos Aires community to use this new and innovative service.
The PET/CT equipment is used for Positron Emission Tomography + Computed Tomography. They do not imply pain and are very safe for the patients who must use them.
“The studies carried out on the new equipment make it possible to evaluate the specific response of the patient to different treatment drugs, to accurately assess their efficacy and in certain cases to evaluate the implementation of new therapeutic plans based on cell activity, assess the progression of the disease or early identification of its recurrence. Logically, all this helps the treating physician to make decisions.” Mauro Piatti, director of CIMED.
Is PET/CT used only for cancer patients?
The most widespread worldwide application of PET/CT is Oncology and Onco-Hematology. In Argentina approximately 120,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed each year. Therefore, it is a relevant need to define the state of the disease with greater precision and establish the best treatment strategies.
However, clinical studies also validate its application in Neurology, Infectious Diseases, Cardiology and Endocrinology.
On the other hand, the incorporation of this technology completes the medical imaging methods of the highest specialization of a Medical Imaging Center, to assist patients and the consultations of treating physicians.
