Getting thumbs up has never been so expensive. A youtuber could receive up to 20 years in prison for intentionally crashing his plane, in order to go viral.
In the past we talked about Trevor Jacob, who saw how his license was withdrawn by the FAA due to this situation. Jacob came to compete in the 2014 Winter Olympics, before starring in the scandal.
Now the District Attorney for the Central District of California reported that Jacob pleaded guilty to one count of destruction and concealment in order to obstruct a federal investigation.
The maximum penalty is 20 years in prison. The date on which the sentence is expected to be handed down is not known.
The facts for which the youtuber is accused
On November 24, 2021, Trevor Jacob took off in the plane from the Lompoc City airport in California. Although he said that he would head to the town of Mammoth Lakes, He ended up jumping into the void by parachute, crashing the device.
He recorded himself the whole time, uploading the video to his YouTube channel. It currently has more than 4 million views, with the title “I crashed my airplane.”
Jacob He pretended that the plane’s engine had been damaged, saying he was “happy to be alive.” At the end of the video, the youtuber was helped by some farmers.
But the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) opened an investigation, and the Justice Department published the result: Jacob intentionally crashed his airplane.
“In the weeks following the plane crash,” the DOJ says, “Jacob lied to the investigators stating that he did not know the location of the plane wreckage, according to the plea agreement.”
“In fact, on December 10, 2021, Jacob and a friend flew by helicopter to the crash site,” authorities added. “There, Jacob used straps to secure the remains, which the helicopter lifted and transported to Rancho Sisquoc, in Santa Barbara County, where they were loaded onto a trailer attached to Jacob’s truck.”
The youtuber tried to remove the evidence, to prevent authorities from investigating the cause of the accident.
