Hernia is a weakness in the abdominal wall that can lead to the emergence of a crack. This opening, in turn, causes material to leak out of the affected region, usually fat or part of the intestine.

Abdominal hernia is usually the result of situations that force this region of the body, such as obesity, pregnancy, intestinal constipation or lifting a lot of weight, for example. In addition, smoking, diabetes and genetic inheritance are also risk factors.

“The condition affects about 10% to 15% of the population. It is more common in men because the anatomy of their pelvis favors the appearance of the problem, in addition to the fact that they are more used to lifting objects with a very high load”, says digestive system surgeon Gustavo Patury Accioly, from São Paulo.

Treatment

In virtually all cases doctors indicate surgery to treat the problem, especially in the inguinals. That’s because the tendency is for the hernia to grow, leading to the chance of part of the intestine being trapped in it. This allows entrapment and, in more serious cases, strangulation of the intestine, which impairs the passage of blood to the organ and can cause necrosis and even death.
