The results of a survey by Altroconsumo reveal that it is possible to buy excellent extra virgin olive oil by paying even less than €5 for a 1-litre bottle. Find out which one it is now!

The extra virgin olive oil it is a very healthy condiment that is never lacking in our homes. We always use a teaspoon to season pasta, vegetables and fish.

On the market we find many varieties and it is often difficult to find your way around to buy the most convenient one. In fact, we tend to think that the most expensive product is also the best. Often this is not true and, indeed, we can buy excellent products by spending very little. According to a survey by Altroconsumo, the cheapest extra virgin olive oil costs just €4.43, very little if we consider that it is sold in 1-litre bottles.

The cheapest olive oil palm is awarded the DeSantis classic extra virgin olive oil, which obtained a quality score of 71 out of 100. Therefore it proved to be an excellent product and also the cheapest among the 30 analyzed by Altroconsumo experts.

The best score belongs to another oil

Another extra virgin olive oil obtained the best quality score (78 out of 100). It’s about Monini Bios 100% Italian Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil. However, the latter has a higher cost than the DeSantis and that is €8.34 for a 0.75 liter bottle.

Despite the higher quality, it is therefore not the cheapest extra virgin olive oil among those analysed. The higher cost is not in fact justified by the format of the package, which is even smaller.

The criteria of the test

To give a score to each extra virgin olive oil analysed, Altroconsumo experts relied on it on some specific criteriaincluding:

  • the label (as in the survey on pasta and in all those conducted by this association);
  • the acidity;
  • the oxidation state;
  • the state of conservation;
  • the quality of the olives with which the oil was produced;
  • the absence of pesticides;
  • other unspecified chemical analyses.

Furthermore, each product underwent an anonymous organoleptic evaluation by a jury of expert tasters. So, the best extra virgin olive oil costs €4.43 based on the quality/price ratioat least according to the results of this survey.
