Accused of massacre in Cleveland returns this Thursday to court

HOUSTON – This Thursday, Francisco Oropeza, accused of committing a massacre in the city of Cleveland, is expected to appear in court for the second time.

Oropeza is accused of killing five of his neighbors after a dispute outside his home located about 44 miles north of Houston on April 28.

The defendant faces murder charges and is due to appear in San Jacinto County Court in Cold Spring this Thursday morning.

Francisco Oropesa, originally from Mexico, is accused of the death of Diana Velásquez (21 years old), Julisa Molina (31 years old), José Casares (18 years old), Sonia Guzmán (25 years old) and Daniel Laso (9 years old), who were attacked with an AR-15 rifle on April 28, apparently, because they reproached him for the noise he was making when shooting into the air in the backyard of his home.

Oropesa was arrested on May 2 in the Conroe area, after an intense manhunt involving federal, state and local agents for several days.

A special jury must determine if Oropesa’s accusation is aggravated, which would lead him to face the death penalty if found guilty.

Oropesa, who was set a total bond of $7.5 million, had been deported four times to Mexico between 2009 and 2016.

His partner, Divimara Lamar Nava, was also arrested on charges of tampering with evidence.
