Texas highways succumb to extreme heat

HOUSTON – The intense heat that has hit Texas this summer is wreaking havoc on its extensive highway network.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), there have been at least 10 cases of road damage in the Houston area alone in the past two weeks due to prolonged heat. During that period, cities like Houston have experienced little rainfall, and maximum temperatures above 100 degrees.

The extreme heat is testing the strength of the roads, as the concrete used in their construction expands and contracts with changes in temperature. This repetitive expansion and contraction can weaken the road structure, leading to dangerous cracking and deformation.

TxDOT is working hard to address these issues and make necessary repairs to the affected roadways. However, these incidents are a reminder of the importance of proper infrastructure and constant maintenance to ensure the safety of drivers.

In addition, drivers are urged to be alert for any signs of damage on the roads, such as cracks, potholes or deformations, and immediately report them to the appropriate authorities. It is essential to maintain caution and the appropriate speed when traveling on these affected roads, in order to avoid possible accidents.

Under the Texas Code of Civil Practice and Remedies, Title 101.021, TxDOT is not authorized to use state funds to cover damage to property, such as vehicles, that is damaged by poor road conditions. Should you wish to file a claim, it is recommended that you contact your insurance company and notify them of the incident and damage to your property.
