The adult education center in the west of Duisburg is back with a brand new programme. An extremely popular course is already fully booked.
It’s a full house again at Körnerplatz near the adult education center in Duisburg-West. And in the very literal sense, because in the semester that is now starting, all courses can again be offered in full group sizes. “Of course that’s great for us, because learning together in a group is much nicer than alone at home in front of the screen,” says VHS director Volker Heckner.

In addition, many more people can take part in the comprehensive course program, which of course also includes some new features this semester: “There will be a stand-up paddling course on the Toeppersee, we are doing a photo excursion through the west of Duisburg and there are many new offers in the vegetarian or vegan kitchen area,” reveals manager Eva Fastabend. Many courses that have been on offer for a long time will also be relaunched. “After the pandemic, we are not quite at the level of 2019, but the demand is still high, so we expect to be able to report as many interested parties as before Corona,” explains Heckner and is optimistic about the learning and further education motivation of the people of Duisburg.

If you have any questions, you can get individual advice during the regular opening hours of the office at Körnerplatz 1 directly behind the district office. It is open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A separate consultation hour for language advice is offered on Tuesdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Anyone who has to work late can take advantage of the offer on February 2nd and 9th from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The office can also be reached outside of opening hours on 02065 9058475. Eva Fastabend and her team are available to all those who want to learn with advice and action and try to find the right place in the right course for everyone. “Especially in the IT sector, it is often difficult for course participants to choose the right offer. The best way to clarify this is in a personal meeting,” says the director. A fixed appointment must be made for this in advance.
Adult education center in Rheinhausen: hula hoop course and amateur radio operator
Since last autumn, the Duisburg West Adult Education Center has also been offering outreach educational work in German and Turkish. Kadir Özdemir hides behind this somewhat woody formulation, who visits companies, institutes or facilities in general on behalf of the VHS and provides information about educational opportunities directly on site. The planners are not only particularly proud of the hula hoop course that is about to start, but also of their new cooperation with the Rheinhausen amateur radio operators, who are really looking forward to explaining to many people interested in technology how radio waves work and why radio still works when the cell phone network is down. So there is a lot of new things to discover, and without a virus, learning is much more relaxed.
VHS in Duisburg: motorcycle repair course is already fully booked
However, there is one drop of bitterness for bikers who like to screw things up in the coming semester: the motorcycle repair courses are already fully booked again. Apparently, people even come from Mallorca for this. If you prefer to start a little smaller, you can register with the bicycle mechanics. There is still capacity here.
