The federal drug commissioner Burkhard Blienert urges greater protection, especially for children and young people, from damage to their health caused by alcohol and smoking. On Thursday in Berlin, the SPD politician called, among other things, for “consistent steps” against alcohol advertising. You have to get out of the internet, television and radio – preferably around the clock, at least during prime time.

The minimum age for alcohol must also be put to the test. Being allowed to drink from the age of 14 in the presence of the parents is “health policy nonsense of the past” and must be abolished.

Blienert said: “Hardly any other European country has such a liberal approach to alcohol, tobacco and Co.” Every year around 150,000 people die in Germany as a result of alcohol and tobacco consumption. One in eight adults also has a problem with gambling.

Blienert is about more health protection

The Federal Government Commissioner spoke out in favor of further advertising restrictions. There is no reason why colorful pictures for cigarettes, heaters and e-cigarettes can still be advertised at kiosks, supermarket checkouts and petrol stations. Sports betting advertising on television, radio and the Internet before 9 p.m. should be banned to improve youth and consumer protection when it comes to gambling, which is the responsibility of the federal states.

With regard to the controlled release of cannabis for adults planned by the traffic light coalition, Blienert said that he was concerned with nothing more than more health protection: “Better standardized, controlled cannabis from the shop than contaminated cannabis from the dealer in the city park.” (dpa)
