The Argentine Rugby Union (UAR) confirmed a historic decision after announcing that will modify the logo of Los Pumas and other national franchises. This Monday, the entity that regulates rugby throughout the country presented the “new identity of the selected ones”, while changing some details in the classic shield of the institution.

“More Cougars than ever! We are proud to be able to unveil our new logo. It is the one that we will wear with great pride on the shirt, every time we have to represent our country. We are Los Pumas!”, they wrote from the official Twitter account of the Argentine rugby team. The main novelty is that the figure of the animal no longer has the classic jaguar spots.

After 57 years, Los Pumas changed their logo

The UAR announcement also influenced other Argentine teams such as Pumas Seven, Pumitas (they will have the same one as Los Pumas) and Las Yaguaretés (the women’s rugby team that will have the figure of the native animal of Argentina, with an orange tone with black spots). For their part, franchises such as Argentina XV, Jaguares, Pampas and Dogos XV also updated their badges.

“In recent times the Argentine Rugby Union has grown in various aspects, in addition to the game, with new platforms, teams, development, communication, among others; for all this, in our image we produce a change of identity, where we define a corporate logo to be used by all members of the Union. Having defined this, the next step led us to return to our origins, where the emblem that identifies us since the historic 1965 tour was used only by our senior national team, so that the Puma is used only by the Pumas,” he explained. the president of the UAR, Gabriel Travaglini, in a statement released by the institution.

The shield used by Los Pumas until this Monday originated in 1965, when the national rugby team was on tour in South Africa. At that time, the players’ jerseys had the figure of the jaguar stamped on them, but a local journalist decided to call them “Pumas” because of the difficult pronunciation of the original animal.

Thus, The Pumas will debut their brand new logo in the Rugby Championship matches against the All Blacks (July 8 in Mendoza) and on August 5 against the Springboks in Vélez Sarsfield.

Galperin lands in a rugby club in the United States

An important group of Argentine businessmen led by the owner and founder of Mercado Libre has just landed in the North American professional rugby league. They are businessman Marcos Galperin, in partnership with Hernán Kazah; Alexander Macfarlane; Kony Strazzolini and Edgardo Defortuna, who formed a partnership to acquire the franchise of a rugby club located in the city of Miami, which they precisely renamed the Miami Shark MLR.

Sources close to the operation add that the group of local buyers also is the Puma Tomas Cubelli who currently plays for the Western Force of Australia.

Everyone joined the passion that Galperin professes for the sport of the “oval” from his start as a player in San Andrés, inspired by one of his five brothers, Miguel, who was an outstanding back for Belgrano in the ’80s and ’90 and who represented the Buenos Aires team. He even played against Pat Lam’s Auckland on a New Zealand team tour of Argentina in 1990, at the CASI stadium.
