The future of Google search is driven by artificial intelligence. While “simple” algorithms have so far led searchers to their destination, the company’s generative AI should provide users with more information and context in the future, thereby reinventing the search engine.

Google search has evolved steadily over the past 25 years. News came into focus, a huge shopping component was set up and many user questions are already answered in widgets without having to leave the search engine. On smartphones, Google Lens also provides a new type of search with its object recognition via images or the camera. According to Google, with more than 12 billion visual searches per month.

Searching with AI: Video gives a preview of Google search

On the occasion of the Google I/O 2023, the search engine operator will talk about its so-called Search Generative Experience (SGE) and the associated generative artificial intelligence (AI). Comparable to Google Bard, the search should be able to be used like a chatbot in the future, which also recognizes complex search queries and displays a combined result from several sources (e.g. websites, images, videos, etc.).

AI solves complex queries and improves shopping experience

Google follows the example “Which is better for a family with children under 3 and a dog, Bryce Canyon or Arches National Park?” at. If users were currently to make several search queries to Google in order to get a clear answer to the question, the AI will in future provide a summary of relevant information from the web. At the same time, it is possible to ask follow-up questions to get more information or to specify the search.
Answers directly from Google AI instead of webpages

With a similar approach, Google wants to redesign the shopping experience of its users within the search. Reviews, ratings, prices and product images should go hand in hand to enable purchase advice without having to leave Google search. Still, Google is confident: “As we incorporate generative AI into search, we will continue to drive valuable traffic to sites across the web.”

Search Labs so far only in the USA

Google search is one of the company’s most important building blocks and will not embark on its journey to generative artificial intelligence overnight. So Google is starting the experiment Search Labs a platform to try out the new search generative experience in the Chrome browser and Google apps for Android and iOS. For the time being, however, the laboratory version is only available in English and only in the USA.
