Carlos Velázquez Tiscareño, director of the Mexico City International Airport (AICM), warned that due to the significant overcrowding of this airport, the property falls on the edge of insecurity. He pointed out that it is a challenge to manage a 769-hectare terminal that has been at the limit of its capacity for almost 10 years.

Interviewed by El País, he pointed out that the CDMX airport property faces challenges from the million-dollar debts of airlines and tenants to drug trafficking and crime.

“When we arrived there were about 7,500 million pesos in debts, but we cannot collect some of them, such as Interjet, Mexicana, Aeromar, which we know will not be able to be collected, but even so they enter into our finances. Regarding the debt with locals, from July to December of last year we implemented a solidarity program for all taxi drivers who had a debt. With all these measures, much of this debt has been recovered. I believe that we are at 85% or 90% recovery of the debt in stores,” said Velázquez Tiscareño for the information outlet.

In terms of security, surveillance was reinforced, and since February there have been no reports of luggage theft, although there are frustrated attempts thanks to the 1,700 security cameras that exist on the property, which will increase. He specified that at AICM there are 1,500 sailors present, 600 auxiliary police officers and other agents for filter checks.

Carlos Velázquez, spoke about the saturation of the airport: “We made a reduction of slots that are landing and takeoff times, from 61 to 52, with the sole objective of reducing saturation. But the airlines brought in bigger planes and, then, it didn’t work, it wasn’t even corrected, it got worse and this year, we may possibly reach 52 million people. Last year there were 46 million and this terminal can no longer support so many people and that is why measures are being taken in this regard”.

He added that the airport “has nowhere to grow and there is no space for new companies, if at all after 10:00 p.m. and until 5:00 a.m. He added that it seeks to reduce the pressure of saturation in the AICM, reducing some 10 million passengers per year, if circumstances allow it », as revealed by REPORTUR.mx (AICM forces Aeroméxico to change terminals due to saturation).
