Alexander Buzakov knew the powerful men in Russia. Footage from 2019 shows the Director General of the Admiralty Shipyard in St. Petersburg solemnly walking down a red carpet at a shipyard alongside President Vladimir Putin and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.

Now Buzakov died unexpectedly. This is reported by the Reuters news agency with reference to a message from the shipyard.

The shipyard’s press release said Buzakov’s death was “sudden” and “tragic”. No further information was given about the cause of death.

The shipyard specializes in non-nuclear submarines. As a former chief engineer and most recently manager of the shipyard, Buzakov was largely responsible for its economic development.

Russian submarines have also been used in the current Ukraine war. In April, the Kremlin said it had used diesel-powered submarines in the Black Sea to attack Ukrainian targets with cruise missiles.

After things had calmed down around the Russian fleet in recent weeks, experts recently reported increased activity in the Black Sea region around the Crimean city of Sevastopol.

Buzakov’s death, meanwhile, joins a list of deaths of various top Russian executives since the beginning of the war – including the head of the oil company Lukoil, Ravil Maganov or ex-vice president of Gazprombank Vladislav Avayev.

Buzakov was according to his employer 66 years old. (tsp)
