Bots are an integral part of today’s Internet and do not mean that they are automatically “evil” or have to do with spam, attacks, etc. Of course, this is often the case, because otherwise a figure of 47.4 percent bot traffic would not be possible.

Because that’s the conclusion of a report by cyber security company Imperva. This is its tenth annual Bad Bot Report published (via Security Magazine) and this includes a global analysis of automated bot traffic on the Internet. However, as one can conclude from the title of the report, “bad” bots are the focus of the Imperva investigation.

“Evil” bots are on the rise

And the results are undoubtedly amazing, and not necessarily for the better. For the fourth year in a row, the volume of “bad bot” Internet traffic has increased. What is specifically meant here are malicious, automated software applications. These are capable of high speed abuse and attacks. In 2022 there was an increase from 2.5 percent to 30.2 percent.

“Automated attacks with business logic are on the rise, powered by malicious bots that evade detection while causing damage and enabling online fraud,” explains Imperva. “They mimic human behavior and abuse business logic, allowing threat actors and scammers to conduct a wide range of malicious activities.” Travel (24.7 percent), retail (21 percent), and financial services (12.7 percent) saw the most bot attacks. In terms of bot traffic, gaming led the way with 58.7 percent and telecom with 47.7 percent.

Overall, bot traffic will probably soon surpass human use: Last year, bots came to 47.4 percent, which is an increase of at least 5.1 percent.
